Who we are

CWM Europe is one of the six Regions of CWM (Council for World Mission), a partnership of churches in mission.

About CWM

CWM is a worldwide partnership of churches in mission made up of over 21 million Christians in forty countries of the world. We believe that mission begins with God and that he invites us to partner with him in mission, which takes place and shape in the life and witness of local Christian communities and congregations.

The 31 member churches of CWM share experiences of mission through training, short-term exchanges and consultations. In partnership with CWM member churches share resources of learning, people and resources together in God’s mission. The 31 member churches are located in six Regions: Europe, Caribbean, South Asia, East Asia, Pacific and Africa. Working globally, regionally and cross-regionally, CWM is committed to enabling its member churches to develop missional congregations through its mission priorities:

  • Developing missional congregations
  • Reflect and research
  • Justice and witness
  • Capacity development

CWM was created in 1977 and incorporates the London Missionary Society (1795), the Commonwealth Missionary Society (1836) and the (English) Presbyterian Board of Missions (1847).

About CWM Europe

The Europe Region is made up of five member churches:

Many CWM Europe churches work in a context where life in community is fragile, they witness to Christ at the margins of society in a post-modern context. As a partnership of churches in mission the European Region works to enable member churches to develop missional congregations through mutual accompaniment and resourcing the member churches in mission through CWM’s programmes and initiatives. CWM Europe is managed by a Regional Mission Council made up of two directors from each of the member churches. CWM has a holistic understanding of mission holding that mission is very broad being expressed in values, attitudes and activities. This range of mission is often to as “the five marks of mission.”

  • Proclaim the good news of the kingdom.
  • Teach, baptise and nurture new believers.
  • Strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.
  • Respond to human need by loving service.
  • Seek to transform unjust structures of society.

From 2013-17 the CWM Europe mission programme includes:

  • Developing missional congregations
  • Equipping missional leaders
  • Youth programme

CWM Europe is staffed by a Regional Mission Secretary and Programme Associate.
